About the Artist

Ayna Paisley is a self-taught London-based artist and art teacher who is noted for her dream-like mixed media paintings. Growing up in Moscow with artist parents, Ayna started her journey with a very traditional approach to art. However, she set aside traditional techniques to experiment with fresh ideas and explore the possibilities of mixed media. Ayna also teaches her techniques and creative approach to art and inspires many artists. Her body of work comprises peculiar contemporary pieces created with acrylic, encaustic and oil painting, juxtaposed with paper collages and vintage imagery. Ayna has exhibited her artworks in London, UK, Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia.

Why Gouache

Gouache, also called opaque watercolours, is often thought of as a tool for illustrators.

But I'm here to prove to you that you can use it to paint anything: still life, landscapes, flowers, figures, you name it! I think gouache has great potential because it can imitate different media: delude it with water it looks and acts like watercolor, put it thick and pasty and it imitates oils. Mix it with pencils, pastels and pens to create texture and interesting mark making. It's perfect for everyday sketching, for studies, for plein-airing (painting outside). It's beginners friendly, because you don't need to commit to easels, solvents and canvases.

All you need is a box of gouache, brushes, water and paper! It's that easy :)

Testimonials

Great step-by-step tutorial for people just starting out. I had no idea how to start a simple painting like this, so going through the basics really demystified the process and now I understand how to go about doing something like this on my own.

Very well done course, which allowed me to approach gouache easily, without pressure. Just enjoying the process and being aware of the different techniques and renderings that can be obtained. I highly recommend Ayna's classes in general, she is a wonderful teacher and a generous artist. :)

Frédérique Mussard

I have struggled with Gouache painting but this class made it click for me.
Clearly spoken and clearly delivered with somebody who knows how to teach (or is a natural teacher!)
